Be A Big Sister!!!
For women 20 years and older: This one-to-one mentoring program matches girls (ages 7-15) with women who live in or around their community. Big Sisters spend time with Little Sisters weekly for the first three months and a minimum of twice per month thereafter for at least 12 months.
Matches meet on days and times of their choosing and do activities that they both enjoy, such as playing games, watching movies or riding bikes. They develop a special friendship based on trust and respect as they learn about and from each other!
Please read below for a first hand account of the Big Sister experience.
Why I Became a Big Sister
It’s difficult to put into words why I became a Big Sister. It most likely had something to do with where and how I was raised and my instinctive desire to give back to the community in which I live. Since I was matched with my Little Sister, Meg, five years ago―she was 11 at the time―I have been the only consistent person in her life. When I say this it is not to brag or sound self-important, but rather to emphasize the need for girl-focused mentoring here in Boston and beyond. If this inconsistency is happening in Meg’s life, then it is probably happening in many other young girls’ lives in our city’s neighborhoods.
Despite the significant challenges Meg has faced over the years, it has been my goal to put a smile on her face, be present in her life, care about her unconditionally and help her realize that she is in control of the choices she makes. In doing so, we have managed to have a lot of fun together! Some of our favorite activities are getting manicures, cooking, volunteering at the local animal shelter, whale watching, having slumber parties, shopping, eating ice cream sundaes and going to the movies. We have even started our own tradition of going to see every new Harry Potter movie together when it hits theaters!
We have fun teaching each other new things too. Whether it is Meg filling me in on the hottest hip hop stars like Chris Brown or me showing Meg how to crochet and guiding her on her path of becoming a veterinarian—which is her dream job—we are constantly learning from each other. My experience as a Big Sister has provided a vehicle for me to help Meg discover opportunities out there waiting for her and give her the confidence she needs to make her wishes come true!
